Watercolour rhino painting by British artist Jos Haigh - Venerable Victor

  • Watercolour artist Jos Haigh used swirling colours of magenta and green to show the deep bond the rhino has with the land, with temptation like gold in its horn. They need much luck in this fragile world. Venerable Victor will endure.

  • “Are we nearly there yet?” Any parent remember cringing at these words?  Wildife artist Jos was sitting in her kitchen having a cup of tea, remembering what inspired this rhino painting, Venerable Victor.

    Sit back and read.

She had always wanted to take her family on safari, to experience the red earth, the smiling people, the amazing animals.  As this would be an expensive holiday, she and her husband decided to wait until their children were much older so they could really appreciate the experience.  This then raised quite comments from “are we nearly there yet”. Some comments were quite sensible comments like “Should we really be disturbing the wildlife?”   But also irritating comments like “WHAT time do we have to get up in the morning?”  Jos needn’t have worried. Every dawn and dusk, the family was fascinated by the sheer abundance of wildlife, much fatted by the recent rains, calmly going about their business and seemingly unaware of the land rovers and the respectful hushed voices.  They saw so many wonderful African elephants, cheetah, lions, but what eluded them was the rhino.

On last day of the stay Jos’s husband caught some bug so the parents decided not to go on the final dawn run. Their children (actually young adults)  were determined to go by themselves. Three hours later they came back utterly jubilant, breathless, their eyes on fire.  They had seen a magnificent rhino.  How lucky was that?  Such a memorable safari!

  • Jos has used lots of water to bring out the special texture you can see when the watercolour spreads and divides. It brings out the particular leathery skin of the rhino. And look at those eyes, slightly bored of you, ha!

  • Even if you haven’t seen these magnificent animals in person, you must admire how they use their huge presence and quiet energy to endure.

Also, this artwork is quite stylish artistically with the colour breaking up but still being vibrant.

  • Although small, this painting does look grand on its own, on an important wall that needs to have impact.

  • Perhaps the majestic rhino is one of the most poached animals in Africa.  If you’ve been inspired by the African rhino, then this painting Venerable Victor is for you. Cherish the memory in your home. Invite the rhino to be part of your life.

  • Many art lovers have found Jos Haigh’s work from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, for which she is a valued Partner Artist.  Her clients express much joy at seeing the artwork on their walls. They particularly love her flamboyant style which is characterised by instant recognition of the animal in vivid startling colours. The deep ivory mount sits well in its inexpensive frame.

  • A recent painting of a a mother and baby rhino was bought by a woman who was brought up in Kenya and has a deep love of Africa.  She loved the blues and gold in this painting, and also the baobab tree in the background, as any background is unusual in wildlife artist Jos Haigh’s paintings.  It has pride of place in her lounge in Ireland.

“Paintings are beautiful and well priced.
