• Raptor’s Delight is an original painting of an enormous vulture swooping over a tasty morsel while also trying not to be a tasty morsel for the lions nearby. Wildlife artist Jos Haigh used jewelled colours of emerald green and deep pink in the swirling feathers of this dramatic bird.

  • Yes, wildlife artist Jos Haigh could so nearly have been eaten alive by a lion.  Can you possibly believe this story?  On safari, Jos and her daughter decided to go for a jog within the safari camp grounds in the Masai Mara.  The camp staff said it would be fine as long as they stuck to the boundary.  There were no walls, no fences.  “Turn right at the end of the last lodging” was the instruction.  Which wasn’t followed.  Jos and Catherine were chatting so much while jogging, they totally missed the last lodging and carried on.  Out of the corner of her eye, Jos saw the Masai guard stand up and started following them, armed with his spear.  “Needs a pee”, she thought.  As we all know, everything is straw coloured out in the savannah, so well camouflaged including the lioness dozing on a rock some 30 steps ahead.  Up she stood and stared at the joggers.  “What have we here?” she must have thought! The two joggers screeched to a halt, turned and fled.  Jos couldn’t breathe.  All she could see were Catherine’s heels ahead of her slowly getting further and further away.  “She’ll eat Mum before me” Catherine was thinking.  So thought Jos too.  She glanced back in panic, only to see the lioness slowly turn away and amble off, a bit bored.  “ – mad dogs and Englishmen” she must have thought.  Jos and Catherine raced past the amused Masai guard, straight to their lodgings and collapsed.  “Lions are very used to us humans” the staff said later.  “Lion must have been full” Jos thought.

She could almost see the vultures swirling above, waiting for some juicy Jos!  This story inspired wildlife artist Jos Haigh to paint the relentless raptor, Raptor’s Delight.  A survivor if ever there was one - utter patience biding its time, dodging sharp claws and teeth snatching a morsel here and there.

  • The huge wing span is emphasised by the intricate patterns and swirls on the feathers. The talons and beak are dramatic in their intense colour.

  • Have you ever been to Africa? Seen these wonderful birds with their jet black feathers and magnificent wing span?  They too have a place in this world, finishing off the carcases, cleaning up! If you’ve been inspired by the big raptors of Africa, then this painting is for you.. Cherish the memory in your home. Invite the bird to be part of your life. Make it an heirloom for your children.

  • This painting is large and magnificent. It’s a kick-ass painting for a kick-ass wall.  Pride of place, nothing less.  It should stop your friends in their tracks.  It will.

  • You will love it because it’s such a genuinely marvellous painting. End of!

  • Many art lovers have found Jos Haigh’s work from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, for which she is a valued Partner Artist.  Her clients express much joy at seeing the artwork on their walls. They particularly love her flamboyant style which is characterised by instant recognition of the animal in vivid startling colours. People appreciate the high quality of the framing. Deep ivory mounts with a shimmering (emerald green in this case) hand-painted edge, bespoke framing and the crystal clear non-reflective glass are the hallmarks of many of Jos’s framed pieces. Non-reflective glass though expensive, is worthwhile to ensure that her artworks maintain their vibrancy and do not fade with time.

  • Jos has sold a large painting to a client in London, the raptor has pride of place in the living room, where the dark of the fireplace mirrors the deep blues in the bird’s feathers.  The artwork is much loved - Jos is very happy.
