• Jos does acknowledge that cows are not your typical wildlife.  But she knows how wild they can be.  Using vibrant purple and orange, animal artist Jos Haigh captures the fiercely maternal instinct of this cow, painted on fine cotton paper. She was inspired to paint this confident black cow who did protect her calf, and her expression said - “I’ve won!”

    She is Nora Batty!

  • Did the cow jump over the moon.  No!  Jos Haigh did.

Well! Wildlife artist Jos Haigh has to admit that not all cows are mellow.

Long long time ago, she bought her young 4 year old young son his first pair of walking boots.  He was so proud of his them.  The family used to walk for hours in the Yorkshire Dales, lunch was home-made sandwiches, crisps and an apple, then more walking.  Oliver carried a small stuffed hedgehog toy with him on his walks and saved his apple for the cows. The first day with these new boots, Oli kept falling over, nobody couldn’t understand why. There were tears. The first fall was in a cow pat - there were tears.   Next the hedgehog cuddly went missing- more tears. It was a disaster until Jos noticed that his long laces kept tangling with the lace hoops on his other foot.  The cuddly was also found and all was well.  Until…

…they climbed over a style into a muddly field full of cows, Jos’s husband was way ahead, the rest of the family followed after him, Jos keeping a watch on her boy’s laces.  So much so that she failed to notice that the field not only had cows but calves as well.  As we all know mammy cows are very protective of their young.  A bit like Jos herself.  Anyway, she looked up just in time to see this large furious cow head down, pawing the ground about to charge at her husband.  From the deep recesses of her mind she remembered what she had to do.  Arms spread wide she raced ahead, shouting loudly at the top of her voice.  The children were astonished.  Her husband turned round startled.  But it worked, the cow stopped in its tracks.  It probably couldn’t believe that somebody was bellowing more loudly that her?  Impossible.  But it worked, the cows stood shock still as the family ran to climb over the style out of the field to safety. They escaped, whew!

  • This watercolour cow painting has got a special feature of crackle texture on the muzzle to give it a wonderful realistic look.

  • You should buy this painting if you love cows and appreciate their strong maternal instinct. Mammy cows are confident, self-assured and protective of their calves. If you are a mammy you need to buy this, if you are not, you need to buy this for your mammy.

Watercolour cow painting by British artist Jos Haigh - Nora Batty

  • ‍ The artwork is small, beautifully framed and indeed will look great on a side wall, or mixed with other paintings.  Jos wonders if she may be so bold to suggest it pairs well with her other cow painting, Hazy Jane, framed in a similar style.

  • You will love it for its rivers of colour all flowing into each other. Also, wildlife artist Jos Haigh has put in some serious shiny crackling on its muzzle, difficult to capture on a photograph but really shows the reality of a watery muzzle! Jos loves a good muzzle.

  • Many art lovers have found Jos Haigh’s work from the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, for which she is a valued Partner Artist.  Her clients express much joy at seeing the artwork on their walls. They particularly love her flamboyant style which is characterised by instant recognition of the animal in vivid startling colours. People appreciate the high quality of the framing. Deep ivory mounts with a shimmering (cerise in this case) hand-painted edge, bespoke framing and the crystal clear non-reflective glass are the hallmarks of many of Jos’s framed pieces. Non-reflective glass though expensive, is worthwhile to ensure that her artworks maintain their vibrancy and do not fade with time.

  • Jos Haigh was commissioned to paint a portrait for a great couple who love their pet dogs, and this was a bit of a success. She feels from her experience that people who love dogs usually love cows.

“This is the second amazing painting Jos has done for us - this time of our two wonderful rescue dogs from Spain - our 30th wedding anniversary present to ourselves. We just love how she captures their facial expressions and brings them to life with colour in her own unique way. She is wonderfully patient whilst we look through all sorts of combinations of photos to achieve what we are looking for. What can I say a very special picture for two very special dogs. Thank you Jos and it was fab to you see you in person again.”
