I don’t have a good cheetah story so I’m gonna tell you a lion story.

Was it us chasing the lion?  Can you believe it, we decided to go for a jog within the Masai Mara camp grounds.  Yes, that’s fine, they said, as long as you stick to the boundry.  Turn right, they said, at the end of the last lodging.  

But we didn’t. 

Catherine and I were chatting so much while we were jogging, we missed the last lodging and carried on.  Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the Masaii guard stand up and started following us, armed with his spear.  Needs a pee, I thought.  Everything straw coloured out in the savanna, including the LIONESS dozing on a rock some 30 steps ahead.  Up she stood and stared at us.  What have we here, she must have thought!

We screeched to a halt, turned and fled.  I couldn’t breathe.  All I could see were Catherine’s heels ahead of me slowly getting smaller and smaller.  She’ll eat Mum before me, was what she was thinking.  AND SO WAS I.  I glanced back in panic, only to see the lioness slowly climb down and amble in the opposite direction – mad dogs and Englishmen, she must have thought.  We raced past the amused Masaii guard, straight to our lodgings and collapsed. 

What did they say later: Lions are very used to us humans, they love us. 

What did I think later: Lion must have been full,.

Moral: let sleeping cats lie.
