The story…
We love hiking. As soon as my youngest son was four we bought him his first pair of hiking shoes. Proper shoes where he could mess in puddles , climb rocky hills , kick stones. It was the best investment as it told him that this was serious business and no-one was going to carry him if he complained he was tired. He never did. He loved the walks, running up and down the hills with his sister, picnics - sandwiches, crisps and an apple. He always tried to save his apple to feed the beautiful dewy cows we came across in the Yorkshire Dales. These memories have inspired my painting of Hazy Jane.
I ask myself, what expression do I love? As an artist I sometimes feel I need to crawl into the mood of the animal I am painting. In all my years of experience with creating art, I have come to the realisation that sometimes people like to transfer their stress and sadness into something beautiful like art. I have learned to seek out the animal’s vulnerability and joy in its environment, and the simple pleasure in seeing the colours mixing to create depth, shadows, expression, makes me happy. What expression do I love? Sometimes funny, sometimes joyful, sometimes peaceful.
